Sense Corp Texas 4000 for Cancer Fact Sheet • The Sense Corp Texas 4000 is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to find a cure for cancer and spread the message of prevention and early detection. The primary method of raising funds is through a 70-day bike trip. • Two teams of 25 young adults bike from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska. The “Rockies” team travels north through the Rocky Mountains, Wyoming and Canada, while the “Coastal” team bikes west through Arizona, then north through California, Oregon, Washington and Canada. • The trip for each team spans more than 4,500 miles and takes 70 days. Each rider pledges $1.00 per mile for the ride, committing to raise $4,500 for the trip. Join in on the adventure! Portions from Riders' Blogs: ______
As of yesterday, I’ve completed all three of these tasks and I’m going to Alaska! I have no idea if I’ll have to ride in the sag vehicle again, but it's important to remember that, as Tiffany pointed out, what we're doing as a team to fight cancer is pretty amazing. I certainly can't expect to not have some minor setbacks and even if I do: it's all part of a much larger picture. So I’m doing this ride this summer—and I’m not going to let anything try to tell me otherwise." From Lisa De Losso's Blog on May 10 2009
" BP MS 150 Houston to Austin" I hope everyone enjoyed the ride! BIG THANKS to the NMSS for pulling off a
great ride especially considering all that rain! About 11,000 riders got
out of bed and to la Grange to show support for the Cause. It was really
nice to see all the Pedal Partners waiting for us along the route and at
the Finish Line. Did anyone see the pedaling puppy??? who was that?
Let us know your thoughts about the ride ! Thanks to Dave at Bikeworks, places like Silver City and
Austin will be sharing bikes with the public! That's right. If you see
the Yellow bike go ahead and use it. When you get to where you need to
go, leave it for someone else to use.
Still teaching them to ride that bike I knew this same feeling (independence) is what I wanted for my girls. They were so silly and full of life when they first got on their bikes. Big smiles that made me smile. Screams of laughter and panic all at the same time! It was not easy. As a matter of fact it was down right grueling. I remember clinching my teeth when they would start to fall over. I would reassure them they could do it and that they were ok even if the scrape was as bad as they thought it was. They always thought it was bad. I had to reassure them so maybe they wouldn't cry too loud. I didn’t want Momma to have to come out and scold me for letting them go too soon! The reassurance was not just to keep me from
getting in trouble, it was also true. They would be ok and they would do
it. They learned to ride and happier for it they were. Signed Dad RJC PAWS and PUDDLES Bike Ride

A conversation with the Rider May 11, 2009:
I’m sure you are aware of some of the different tours taken on
by cyclists not only around the country but around the world.
What is the appeal for people to use the Bicycle as a tool for pursuing their real task of bringing awareness to such personal causes?
In regards to this
question, I go back almost 30 years ago when I was asked that same
question when I use commute to work one way 26 miles 3-4 days a week
to teach music. It is the freedom of going at a pace that allows one
to see a lot of the world around and actually feel like you getting
somewhere. Running and walking are OK. But at the end of the day,
you have not really gone very far. I like the feeling I get when
everything comes together. The quality of the ride, the scenery, the
wind in my face at 40-60 mph high down a mountain. It all feels
great. About 25 years ago, I rode from
What are some of the fears one must overcome in order to just
get to that first day of such a daunting challenge such as
riding 9000 miles?
This is tough one.
Hopefully not having the kind of day I had today. Today was a
really bad one... everything breaking (Garmin mass
storage mode broke need to get garmin to rush a new one... bought a
backup then the map files in the box was 2 years old) wrong size on
delivery items (Camera bag for the high def camera was not the
professional level.. thus did not fit), getting dropped on calls
while try to fix the bag problem.. Being at the airport to pick up
my first driver Jeff for Monday as I asked him to do... did not look
at the email details because I assumed he was coming as discussed..
He did not set it for Monday but Tuesday because he was afraid he
would have nothing to do. Even flatted tonight on my ride.. new
tires.. new tubes... filler compound in the tubes.. Meant to be a
bad day. But the ride did help a lot. Had a great one (22.3 mph at a
HR of 105 with an easy watt average of 146 and no head or tail
winds.. only side winds at 68°. Doesn't get much better than that
on a ride.) In all seriousness,
simply not meeting my goal. I hate to fail at anything. However, I
picked a goal that is way beyond what a person can imagine they can
do. Last year, the most centuries someone did on record was 89 in 12
months. My actual course is 9109 miles in 90 days of riding with 10
day rest for TV shows etc. My fear is that I will not make it to the
end. If that happens, I will be like the cancer patient who gives it
his or her absolutely best but the disease still wins in the end. I
do not want that to happen because I am trying to set an example so
others will survive and thrive in survival. The uncertainty is
actually why I picked such an extreme challenge. I have absolutely
no idea if I can accomplish it. I know I am fit enough and have the
will while past experiences have showed me I can average 90 to 165
miles day for 3-6 weeks and win. But, with a fixed time frame, I
cannot control the weather, how I feel, and if anything happens
along the way that interferes with meeting my goal for 100 days.
Another reason I picked such an extreme goal is I want to be as
close as possible to every person trying to survive cancer. I want
to be in position where success is clearly not just about what I
accomplish or my will, success will be about my support team, and
most of all, about God giving me the strength to accept the pain,
fatigue, and even the successes along to the way. I promised God 10
years ago that if he let me have a chance at this dream, I would
pedal each RPM honoring him. Thus, God
