Tour De Pink:

How was the ride?
Great Ride!

The "Tour De Pink" is a benefit ride to generate funds for supporting economically challenged women in breast cancer prevention and care.

Many of us have been affected by Breast Cancer and I bet many of you would like to help. Well now is your chance to get on your bike and help raise funds to help in a big way!

Hey, I rode the 12 mile route this year with my wife Patty and another teammate Ali. We talked with and rode with some great riders! We ride each year in remembrance of my wife's Mother, Rosemary Stephenitch. Rosemary's life was cut short due to breast cancer about 20 years ago and she is still very much missed by everyone who knew her. Rosemary is looking down at us now and I know she is very very proud of her daughter for getting up early and getting on a bike when she could be snuggled up in bed, but she got up and rode to help fight for a great Cause!

Remember, it is not the distance but the cause that is important. No matter how many miles you ride, you are bringing awareness and with awareness comes education. The more people we can educate and make aware of the cause the more that will HELP in this fight we all ride for. Most of us have or had someone like Rosemary in our lives that we can ride for, so make no excuses and get ready for next year. Ride for your Rosemary, we do.

The Jenkins brothers are in for a life changing adventure to help with some really great causes. A similar route was undertaken by Bobby Jenkins while he was in college and now his brothers Raleigh and Dennis will ride along side of him to bring awareness to the fight against Hunger, Leukemia & Lymphoma as well as helping the National Kidney Foundation accomplish all their goals.

5-14-09
Bobby and his brothers are riding almost every day now. only 10 days away from the big start they are training when ever they can and eating whenever they can. Bobby has typically been riding every day and a long ride on the weekends. His daughter's wedding changed up the training recently but, I'm sure he would not have had it any other way. How about this dilemma....he is worried about keeping his weight up before the ride even starts!!! How many of you would love to have that problem???!!! Keep up the training gentlemen.

4-23-09
Brothers will be heading through Marble Falls, Goldthwaite, Coleman and Abilene early in their ride. All smiles during the first part of the tour. We need to support them on as they head North!

4-15-09
The Jenkins brothers will be riding about 2, 380 miles and hope to finish by July 6th. they will be followed by Mom! Good job Mom!!!

Stats from the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute
> About 800 bicyclists die in the US every year
> Bicycle crashes and injuries are under reported, since the majority do not involve emergency room visits.
> Eighty eight percent of cyclists' brain injuries can be prevented by a helmet.
> Direct costs of cyclists injuries are estimated at $81 million. > Helmets are cheap, although in the 1990's the typical discount store rock bottom price has risen from under $10 to about $20.

June 6, 2009

Route: Austin to Anchorage

; call 512-497-7190 or 512-329-1908

Fact Sheet

The Sense Corp Texas 4000 is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to find a cure for cancer and spread the message of prevention and early detection. The primary method of raising funds is through a 70-day bike trip.

Two teams of 25 young adults bike from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska. The “Rockies” team travels north through the Rocky Mountains, Wyoming and Canada, while the “Coastal” team bikes west through Arizona, then north through California, Oregon, Washington and Canada.

The trip for each team spans more than 4,500 miles and takes 70 days. Each rider pledges $1.00 per mile for the ride, committing to raise $4,500 for the trip.

Atlas was incredible!! Laison and Lamson (I call him Teo) came out to ride with me in the morning. After cleaning up the gym, changing and grabbing my bike, i saw Laison walk in and tell me Teo had my stuff outside.

So I left Running Brushy Creek Middle School and out in front of the cafeteria, I found Teo armed wiith a bag of goodies and even better....CHAMOIS BUTT'R!!!! If you cycle, you definitely know why I'd need that! Haha

.....But then....came the decision to do either 50 ot 70 miles... We chose 70 because it felt like a good idea. But soon after...we realized...maybe not so much. Laison having played three basketball games the night before and only sleeping 3 hours and not training? Managed to pull off 40 miles! And then Teo pulled off 50 miles! Impressive!

Kazuyoshi also met up with us at the 2nd stop and decided to ride the 70 miler with us too. AND HE KILLED IT!!! He was pacing with me the whole ride after my brothers dropped out. There was a point where we were averaging 20+ miles an hour! I was very very very impressed!!

Then after all that happened, we rolled into Legato winery out in Lampasas for food and a fancy reception!!

"I’m pretty sore today and I definitely need to take it easy this week.

As of yesterday, I’ve completed all three of these tasks and I’m going to Alaska! I have no idea if I’ll have to ride in the sag vehicle again, but it's important to remember that, as Tiffany pointed out, what we're doing as a team to fight cancer is pretty amazing. I certainly can't expect to not have some minor setbacks and even if I do: it's all part of a much larger picture. So I’m doing this ride this summer—and I’m not going to let anything try to tell me otherwise."

" BP MS 150 Houston to Austin"

2009 MS 150 Houston to Austin news....

I hope everyone enjoyed the ride!

BIG THANKS to the NMSS for pulling off a great ride especially considering all that rain! About 11,000 riders got out of bed and to la Grange to show support for the Cause. It was really nice to see all the Pedal Partners waiting for us along the route and at the Finish Line.

With only riding one day we still had the wind to battle. Lots of head wind and there were still lots of hills.

Did anyone see the pedaling puppy??? who was that?

How many times did you think about your Pedal Partner?

Let us know your thoughts about the ride !

Who did you ride for in the "MS150" ?

Yellow Bike Project

Thanks to Dave at Bikeworks, places like Silver City and Austin will be sharing bikes with the public! That's right. If you see the Yellow bike go ahead and use it. When you get to where you need to go, leave it for someone else to use.

Know what you are thinking, but I say give it a chance! You might need to borrow a bike some day??!!!

Father's Day

Still teaching them to ride that bike

When my girls were little my wife and I bought them bikes knowing there is so much to experience on two wheels. Remembering those early days on my Stingray, I wanted that for my girls. It was MY bike. I cleaned it. I kept the tires filled. I made sure not to leave it where someone would harm it or take it from me. I remember wanting to ride all day and all night. There were some days …I Did!

I knew this same feeling (independence) is what I wanted for my girls. They were so silly and full of life when they first got on their bikes. Big smiles that made me smile. Screams of laughter and panic all at the same time! It was not easy. As a matter of fact it was down right grueling. I remember clinching my teeth when they would start to fall over. I would reassure them they could do it and that they were ok even if the scrape was as bad as they thought it was. They always thought it was bad. I had to reassure them so maybe they wouldn't cry too loud. I didn’t want Momma to have to come out and scold me for letting them go too soon!

The reassurance was not just to keep me from getting in trouble, it was also true. They would be ok and they would do it. They learned to ride and happier for it they were.
Funny thing is I am still teaching them. Now days it is not a bike, but life’s lessons I’m teaching. They are much older now but, I am still holding on to their bike. You see sometimes I don’t want to let go. There is so much for them to learn. Too bad I can’t put training wheels on their lives. They are doing great and they will do great things in their lives, but I am still clinching my teeth some days. Oh yeah the screams of laughter and panic come from me now!!!
Love you girls!

A conversation with the Rider May 11, 2009:

I’m sure you are aware of some of the different tours taken on by cyclists not only around the country but around the world.
What is the appeal for people to use the Bicycle as a tool for pursuing their real task of bringing awareness to such personal causes?
In regards to this question, I go back almost 30 years ago when I was asked that same question when I use commute to work one way 26 miles 3-4 days a week to teach music. It is the freedom of going at a pace that allows one to see a lot of the world around and actually feel like you getting somewhere. Running and walking are OK. But at the end of the day, you have not really gone very far. I like the feeling I get when everything comes together. The quality of the ride, the scenery, the wind in my face at 40-60 mph high down a mountain. It all feels great.  About 25 years ago, I rode from Texas to Northern CA and back. I still remember the ride through the great Red Wood Forests of Northern CA. I felt like I could not get any closer to God.

What are some of the fears one must overcome in order to just get to that first day of such a daunting challenge such as riding 9000 miles?
This is tough one. Hopefully not having the kind of day I had today.  Today was a really bad one... everything breaking (Garmin mass storage mode broke need to get garmin to rush a new one... bought a backup then the map files in the box was 2 years old) wrong size on delivery items (Camera bag for the high def camera was not the professional level.. thus did not fit), getting dropped on calls while try to fix the bag problem..  Being at the airport to pick up my first driver Jeff for Monday as I asked him to do... did not look at the email details because I assumed he was coming as discussed.. He did not set it for  Monday but Tuesday because he was afraid he would have nothing to do. Even flatted tonight on my ride.. new tires.. new tubes... filler compound in the tubes.. Meant to be a bad day. But the ride did help a lot. Had a great one (22.3 mph at a HR of 105 with an easy watt average of 146 and no head or tail winds.. only side winds at 68°.  Doesn't get much better than that on a ride.)  In all seriousness, simply not meeting my goal. I hate to fail at anything. However, I picked a goal that is way beyond what a person can imagine they can do. Last year, the most centuries someone did on record was 89 in 12 months. My actual course is 9109 miles in 90 days of riding with 10 day rest for TV shows etc. My fear is that I will not make it to the end. If that happens, I will be like the cancer patient who gives it his or her absolutely best but the disease still wins in the end.  I do not want that to happen because I am trying to set an example so others will survive and thrive in survival. The uncertainty is actually why I picked such an extreme challenge. I have absolutely no idea if I can accomplish it. I know I am fit enough and have the will while past experiences have showed me I can average 90 to 165 miles day for 3-6 weeks and win.  But,  with a fixed time frame, I cannot control the weather, how I feel, and if anything happens along the way that interferes with meeting my goal for 100 days. Another reason I picked such an extreme goal is  I want to be as close as possible to every person trying to survive cancer. I want to be in position where success is clearly not just about what I accomplish or my will, success will be about my support team, and most of all, about God giving me the strength to accept the pain, fatigue, and even the successes along to the way. I promised God 10 years ago that if he let me have a chance at this dream, I would pedal each RPM honoring him. Thus, God

What brought you to the decision to start in Austin? Easy one here, I was a doctoral student at UT Austin when Kay was diagnosed with clear cell ovarian cancer at the tender age of 30 . There is no other place for this journey to start and finish. It was God showed Kay and his greatest miracle to day for us.
