In 1997 a group of parents got together and chose gold as the color for childhood cancer awareness. Gold represents how precious and resilient our children are. Ever since then childhood cancer advocates have been pushing companies, sports teams, and politicians to go gold like they go pink in October. This year has been one of the most successful years for this gold movement. The White House went gold for the FIRST time EVER! That's huge!!! Here's a list of just a few big companies, teams, etc. to support this month for going gold. (none of this is sponsored by the way)
1. MLB, Major League Baseball. Phillies, Red Sox and other MLB teams went gold this year. NFL, will you join?
2. Dunkin’ and Waze. This happened last year but because there’s such slim pickings for companies that go gold I’ll count them anyways even though this promotion isn’t happening anymore. Dunkin and Waze partnered up to creat a new voice pack for navigation. Download the “Going Gold Voice Pack From Dunkin” and you will receive guidance and navigation from a child with cancer. This pack is not only adorable but every time you download it Dunkin’ will make a donation to the Joy in Childhood Foundation. Waze and Dunkin’ also went gold by wearing gold pins on Dunks locations.
3. Ivory Ella. Every year, Ivory Ella partners with a long time friend of Team Cure’s, Megan Bugg to create a new gold collection. This year they have multiple shirts, a bracelet, water bottle and more! 100% of net profits is donated to Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute.
4. Amazon. Every year in collaboration with the American Childhood Cancer Organization, Amazon uses boxes and envelopes with gold ribbons on them to ship their products. This makes so many people aware about childhood cancer and the significance of the month.
Unfortunately, this list is very short but it will be very long one day and it starts with all of us. If we all wear a gold ribbon on our bag and push companies to go gold like they go pink more people would be aware and then childhood cancer gets more funding and then we have a cure. Have your local family owned restaurant go gold. It starts on a small scale.
