What makes cancer bearable?
All of these amazing children must have support to win this battle. Support comes in many forms from friends and family to nurses, social workers, child life specialists, and organizations like Team Cure!
A social worker in Oncology can provide counseling, case management, support groups, transportation, and more. Many families depend on social workers to make this awful experience a bit more manageable. Social workers guide you through your ”new normal” and make sure you have your physical and emotional needs met.
Sorta similar to a social worker, a child life specialist has a very important job. If a child is having a procedure done, for example, a Child life specialist explains to the child what is going to happen at a level they understand for their age. They also help distract children when getting blood taken or their port accessed. They can do this with bubbles, iPad, toys and more. Child life also gives toys to kids in the hospitals similar to Team Cure.
Finally, the job of an organization like Team Cure. My job is to make cancer ”fun”. Take away some of the stress and pain for a little while. We aren't doctors or nurses, we are just kids who love these kids and will dedicate every single moment to them. Team Cure supports families through packages, financial support, wishes, and visits but every organization is different. Though we have a lot of fun with these kids it's also our job to advocate for them. I have the best job in the world. It doesn't pay at all in money, it pays in happiness and there's nothing money can buy that can create the same impact and love as Team Cure. If your child isn't a part of an organization like Team Cure I highly suggest you contact us for a package! It's 100% free, quick and makes a huge difference. Childhood cancer is awful but we are so thankful for social workers, child life specialists, and organizations.
I always say, every team needs a strong defense, we can't just have an offense fighting, it won't work. Children with cancer are in action on offense and doctors, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, organizations and more are on defense protecting these kids.
